It could be mostly just DNS related as through the gateway itself, would be using the Rogers DNS servers vs in your other setup likely was using another.
Could try putting in an alternate DNS local on one device only and see if that improves things. Will prove weither its DNS or not.
All in all, with another router, you would get better wireless range, and better management capabilities.
It shouldn't be anything like traffic shaping. With your own modem or not, the shaping is usually done at a packet level, and would happen either way.
