Re: CGN3 Hitron Ethernet Problems

Hi All,

Like many of you, I too have recently upgraded to the CGN3 modem and suffered through issues.  Since I received so much help from posts here, I just wanted to share some of my experiences, in case it helps out others.

1.  The updated firmware does seem to help with many of the issues, but it took me over a week to receive it after connecting the new modem.

2.  Out of the box, I had trouble in both Gateway and Bridge mode.  Performance was horrible and latency was unusally high.  The gateway mode was such a struggle to deal with (everything seemed so slow) and bridge mode would work for an hour or 2 but then would stop connecting and I would have to reboot the modem.

3.  The most reliable setup I managed (and the one I am now using) is to use the modem in Gateway mode, but configure another router as a gateway to my local network.  So it goes from my local network -> LAN of my router -> WAN of my router -> LAN of the CGN3 -> coax cable.  To do this, I configure my local network on a 192.168.0.1/24 network and the LAN of the CGN3 on a 192.168.100.1/24 network (with DHCP enabled) and ensure that the WAN port of the local router is the only connection to the LAN port of the CGN3.  I disable the firewall and wireless connections on the CGN3 and use the firewall on my router only.

4.  I am on the Hybrid Fibre 60 plan.  In this configuration, I have tested speeds of 40 to 50 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up.  It is good enough for my purposes and has been consistent and reliable.

5.  One of the things I like about this configuration is that I can still manage the CGN3 from my local network by hitting 192.168.100.1 (unlike bridge mode where you would need to connect directly to the modem with a computer).  Another thing I can do is activate the wireless connection and provide a guest network that is completely isolated from my local network resources.

6.  Initially, I still had many issues even with this configuration.  I tried with several different (Trendnet, ASUS, Linksys) (older) routers and each one seemed to have a different compatibility issue with the CGN3.  On a whim, I went out and bought a new Netgear WNR3500L that was on sale ($40) and immediately everything worked very well with the CGN3.  It worked for 3 days straight before I received the new firmware.

IMHO, Hitron/Rogers should be embarrased to be offering such a unit.  The most frustrating part is that there are few options available to customers.  I am just glad I am finally settled into a stable configuration and for the most part, I am happy with the new plan.  Hope this helps someone else,  Regards,
