I was using task manager from the very beginning and never observed anything suspicious. I had it on the screen for hours and the network utilization was always low.
Your advice re Malwarebytes was good. I am not sure the excessive traffic was caused by malware, but now there is no doubt I had some malware on the laptop. After using Malwarebytes it doesn’t heat as before and the fan is almost never switched on. Thank you.
