Too many devices with Hitron CGN3?
I am experiencing problems with my Hitron CGN3 cable modem.
Our household has many devices, from phones, tablets, laptops, printers, gaming systems, Sonos speakers, etc.
The Problem:
When we get many devices on our LAN (WiFi or wired), one of three things happen:
1. Devices "take turns" losing internet access. Often it's as obvious as turning on the Nintendo will make the xbox drop it's internet connection.
2. Or the CGN3 DHCP will fail to provide an IP address to a newly connecting device,
3. Or the CGN3 router will completely disappear from my network. All internet access will be lost, I cannot ping 192.168.0.1, etc. Only a reboot will resolve this.
My router's DHCP space is large enough.. it goes from 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.200.
I don't have a precise number, but the "safe" number of devices is somewhere around 12 to 15. When friends and family come over, then the problem really shows because their extra devices are added to the network (phones, ipods, etc.). I often need to take unneeded devices off the network so others can get on.
When the number of devices is low, I don't have any internet problems at all. I can run for weeks without issues or rebooting my modem.
I have seen this problem when all devices are sharing the same subnet 192.168.0.x
I have also tried segregating devices into separate subnets using access points (dlink and netgear), but the problem still happens.
I have not tried putting the modem in bridge-only mode to use my own routers as the gateway.
Is this a known issue with the CGN3 modems?
Is there a "max device" limit?
Is there a problem with my modem?
Is there a solution?
