Hitron CGN3 not connecting to DS frequency

Hey guys,

My issue is pretty much in the title. My internet has cut out multiple times over the past few days and I'm just getting a blinking downstream frequency light. No other lights are on when this happens. Is there anything I can do to attempt to reconnect the modem? I've tried resetting the modem and checked all of the cable to make sure nothing is disconnected by accident. Nothing has worked.

Thanks guys.

Oct 10, 2017 - I received a letter from Rogers stating I must upgrade my current modem within 30 days.  Could it be for this?

Probably not.  Do you currently have a black CGN3xxx modem and an unlimited internet account?  If so, my guess is that Rogers is shifting unlimited account customers over to the newer CODA-4582 which is DOCSIS 3.1 capable.  Shifting more customers to that modem will allow Rogers additional flexibility in frequency management for the modems and the Cable Modem Termination Systems that support the modems.  End goal .... higher data rates for all concerned.

you can do one of two things:

1.  Call tech support and ask the CSR to run a signal check on the modem.  From what you're saying, that test should fail automatically, followed by a discussion to get a tech out to your home to determine what the problem is.

2.  Log into the modem, navigate to the STATUS .... DOCSIS WAN tab, copy the downstream and upstream tables and paste them into a post.  Those are the cable signal levels and signal to noise ratios.   If they're bad enough, I'll indicate to you to go to step one.  If not, then we follow the bouncing ball, so to speak and see where this leads.

Ok, that makes sense then.  Rogers is shifting customers such as yourself to the CODA-4582.  One word of warning however, some customers with the CODA-4582, which will operate using DOCSIS 3.1 on the downstream side, experience slow data rates.   Best guess is a signal level or signal to noise ratio issue between the modem and CMTS.  I've never seen that with my 4582, but, others have.  Its not a widespread issue, but, it does happen and its pretty aggravating to resolve.  So, fwiw, a heads up.

Thanks for the useful info. My current modem/router was in need of replacement because of poor Wi-Fi performance so this is funny timing...almost seems like Rogers is causing it, to force the modem switch Smiley Wink

Hey ,

Welcome to the Rogers Community Forum!

My brother was facing a similar issue while gaming, so I know first hand how annoying that can be to deal with Smiley Frustrated. Hopefully since your last post, you've managed to resolve this problem.

In your OP,  you mentioned you phoned in and had the IP forwarding reset. Can you clarify what exactly was done by the rep?

What you can also try to do is to disable IPV6 altogether to see if that fixes your problem. From past posts, it seems that has helped majority of our users, including my brother Smiley Wink

  1. Login to Modem (I'm assuming you know how to do this already Smiley Wink)
  2. Click on the "Basic" tab on the top of the page.
  3. Select "Gateway Function".
  4. Next to "Router Mode" change it to "IPv4" instead of "Dual" or "IPv6" which is the default.

Hopefully that helps. Please keep us posted! Thanks  for your continued support and input.

Cheers,

RogersCilio

You were correct, I got a CODA-4582U , it looks like a large Apple Airport Extreme/Time Capsule

"some customers with the CODA-4582, which will operate using DOCSIS 3.1 on the downstream side, experience slow data rates.   Best guess is a signal level or signal to noise ratio issue between the modem and CMTS.  I've never seen that with my 4582, but, others have.  Its not a widespread issue, but, it does happen and its pretty aggravating to resolve."

I haven't ensured others in the household aren't using data, but I just did a speed test and it averaged 289Mbit down / 40Mbit up, which is disheartening...

Modem CODA, firmware 32.

Testing MoCA. MoCA has now firmware 20. Before was 11 and I could connect my adaptor but speeds was

very slow 5M. Adaptor was on and of. After installing PoE ( point of entrance) MoCA filter connection was stady

only speed to slow to watch movie from my NAS HD. Now in this new firmware (20) I got connection for few minutes, check speeds was good 11M, but I lost coax connection. Try reboot my adaptor- nothing,

try disable and enable MoCA in the modem -nothing only reboot CODA modem helped to get connection

for few minutes and again lost connection. I believe MoCA in the modem after few minutes frizzes up.   I believe

when start to download data modem's MoCA stop working

Can you please give me more info about this issue with slow speeds.

I currently am having this problem with the CODA modem and am working with the Rogers Maintenance team to resolve it for me. If you have some suggestions, I can pass it on to them as they have detected speed issues and are looking at fixing it. Having more information can be very helpful for them to troubleshoot things.

Thanks,

Slow Internet Speeds - Check your Security Software

I have been experiencing slow speeds on Gigabit service for some time.  I had a awesome maintenance tech come by and replaced some hardware and was able to get speedtests in the 900 Mbps range.  After he left I still had some speed issues and never cracked the 400 Mbps mark.  On a whim, I decided to turn off my Avast protection and do a test again. My Speed DOUBLED to over the 860 Mbps mark.

Here are the suggestions I tried:  https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB203

So for those who have speed issues, look at your security software and see if that is the culprit.

Wow   Good catch

We often hear how security heuristics will slow down data flow as it is constantly testing computations for things out of the norm and that we are often advised to disable the security software when doing installs, or software that requires a high demand on read writes, and in particular if it touches the boot sectors or MBR at all.

So it is a good thing to be aware of - the details on the Avast page explain very well what is going on and the workarounds, but it certainly leads to a compromise on the functionality of the product.

Another reality of the issue of whether some of our computing is really up to high speed and at the end of the day, no matter the speed there is a level to the speed of our computing system.

Definitely good information.

Rogers Gigabit - Major lag while gaming & not getting nearly full speed

Hey there,

This past month my roommates and I signed up for Rogers Gigabit internet. Ever since we picked up the modem and plugged it in we've been getting random lag spikes while gaming. Furthermore doing speedtests using multiple test sites & devices we don't seem to get more than 200 down and 5 up.

I should note that all of these tests were performed on multiple devices with a gigabit network cards, always yielding the same results. I should also note that the modem is running in bridged mode connected to a Gigabit router (Netgear nighthawk x6).

Is there anything more I should try from my end or do you think this issue will require me to get a tech in?

Here's the status page from the modem along with the DOCSIS event log:

, here's something to consider.   Running an Asus router with the AI Protection enabled will leave IPV4 alone and slow IPV6 packets with additional scans.  The scans are conjecture on my part, but, that would explain why the AI Protection kills IPV6 data rates.

So, just for experimental purposes, try a test run with the modem in IPV4 mode only.  Change the DUAL (stack) setting on the BASIC .... GATEWAY function tab to IPV4 only.  Save the setting.  The modem will take a couple of minutes to switch to IPV4 mode.  I usually reboot the modem as well, ADMIN .... DEVICE RESET .... Reboot.

After the reboot, with the Avast security enabled, see what you end up with in terms of speed test data rates.  I'll be interested in the results.

, there are a couple of issues to look at.

1.  Your signal levels are terrible to say the least.  Call tech support and ask the CSR to run a signal check on the modem.  That should fail automatically, followed by conversation to book a tech visit to check the cabling and connectors.

That being said, the modem is running DOCSIS 3.1 downstream, so the DOCSIS 3.0 Downstream Overview signal levels are essentially meaningless.  However, they probably serve as a fairly reliable indicator of what the DOCSIS 3.1 OFDM Downstream channel numbers look like.  The data on the user interface for the downstream OFDM channel is not correct, but, tech support has access to the correct data.  So, fwiw, the signal check should fail, but the question at hand is whether or not the OFDM channel power levels and signal to noise ratios are within spec.  Only tech support can answer that question at the present time.

The upstream DOCSIS 3.0 signal levels are elevated above what is normal for a modem that is running DOCSIS 3.1 on the downstream side.  Typically they should be down around 30 to 34/35 dBmV for that modem.  So, the elevated upstream numbers, along with the low downstream levels really indicate a cable or connector problem on the go.  Time for a tech visit.

2.  When that issue has been rectified, there is also the possibility of security scans either in the router or in the pc antivirus software slowing the data rates. With that in mind, can you have a read thru this post and down to my response to it as well.

http://communityforums.rogers.com/t5/Internet/Slow-Internet-Speeds-Check-your-Security-Software/m-p/405240#M48429

Running a speed test with the modem in IPV4 mode only, and another speedtest with the modem in Dual (IPV4 and IPV6) mode with the antivirus disabled just for the speedtest should point out whether there is an issue with IPV6 packet scans causing slow rates, or if the antivirus software is impeding faster data rates for both IPV4 and IPV6 operation.

Does the X6 run additional packet scans for IPV6 packets, if in fact you have IPV6 running in the router?

, can you have a look at the following post?

http://communityforums.rogers.com/t5/Internet/Slow-Internet-Speeds-Check-your-Security-Software/m-p/405240#M48429

has brought up a very good point regarding the antivirus programs slowing the data rates.

My own thoughts are that new installs for the 4582 probably arrive with IPV6 enabled, and that possibly, the antivirus programs, or router packet scans might be resulting in slow data rates.  Running a speed test with the modem in IPV4 mode only, and another check with the modem in Dual (IPV4 and IPV6) mode with the antivirus disabled just for the speedtest should point out whether there is an issue with IPV6 packet scans causing slow rates, or if the antivirus software is impeding faster data rates for both IPV4 and IPV6 operation.

There is always the possibility that the DOCSIS 3.1 OFDM channel has an issue with the power levels or the signal to noise ratios.  So, there are a couple of issues to check.  This last item would require a call to tech support as the DOCSIS 3.1 OFDM channel data presented in the user interface isn't correct, but, tech support has access to the correct data.

I'm making an assumption here that if you were able to run higher data rates with the previous modem, those rates should be seen with this modem, all things being equal.  The IPV6 packet scans and antivirus programs are worth checking on.
